Dad’s Holiday Nog

So Christmas vacation has always been my personal all time favorite Christmas movie. I especially love the scene where Clark loses it and dunks his moose cup in that big punch bowl of egg nog and says: “it’s good, good, good… it’s good.” That bowl of egg nog always left an impression on me, I am a huge fan of egg nog and I decided it was finally time to make my own homemade egg nog… I’m serious clark!

Ingredients:

  • 6 egg yolks

  • 1/2 cup sugar

  • 2 cups of milk

  • 1 cup heavy whipping cream

  • 1/2 tsp ground nutmeg

  • pinch of salt

  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

  • 1/2 cup liquor of your choice ( I typically use Southern Comfort, but rum will also work )

Directions:

  1. In a large mixing bowl add egg yolks and 1/2 cup of sugar and whisk together until creamy.

  2. In a medium bowl combine heavy whipping cream, nutmeg and salt and mix together

  3. Put a medium saucepan over medium heat and add milk and whipping cream and bring just to a low simmer

  4. Remove saucepan from heat and let cool for 10 minutes and begin adding your hot milk mixture to your egg yolks 1 spoonful at a time. It is important to space your spoonfuls out and do not stop mixing with your whisk or fork as you add your spoonfuls.

  5. After you have finished tempering your eggs, return your egg nog to the stove top over medium heat and bring just to a simmer or 160º.

  6. Remove from stove and let cool for 10 minutes. Add your vanilla extract and liquor and stir together.

  7. Once egg nog has cooled to room temperature, strain through a fine mesh strainer. cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate. Egg nog will keep for 5 days. Enjoy and Happy Holidays!
